Science in Motion — Grade 2

Watch, practice, and review Grade 2 science.

Science in Motion is the Grade 2 FireFlash series: short, silent whiteboard animations that show one science idea at a time, followed by practice that brings back what a student missed. It covers the big Grade 2 science topics, from the properties of materials to where water is found on Earth.

What the series covers

Physical science starts with materials. Materials Detectives teaches students to observe, test and sort materials, Choosing Materials picks the best material for a job from test results, Build With Pieces rebuilds the same pieces into something new, and Heating & Cooling compares changes that can and cannot be reversed.

Life science looks at living things and where they live: Compare Habitats counts the kinds of plants and animals in different places, What Plants Need plans fair water and light tests, and Pollinators & Seeds shows how animals move pollen and seeds.

Earth science is about land and water: Shaping the Land compares fast and slow land changes and designs that stop erosion, Maps Around Us reads and checks maps of land and water, and Finding Water shows where water is found on Earth. The Water Cycle is a free bonus pack.

How every pack works

Each pack follows the same three steps. Learn cards are silent animations, one idea per card, with the key science words on screen. Review asks questions with feedback and brings back ideas a student missed. Mastery checks what each student can do on their own.

Because the cards have no audio, they work on a classroom screen for whole-class teaching or on student devices during quiet practice. Students open a pack from a link or QR code their teacher shares. When a student finishes, they can print a certificate or save it as a PDF.

Built for Grade 2 readers

Every card uses natural, complete sentences and teaches its science words before asking about them. Questions name an everyday object and its job, like a raincoat that keeps you dry, so young readers know what the question is about. On many cards students tap a picture to answer instead of reading choice words.

Each pack lists the NGSS performance expectations it supports. The cards build understanding and practice; they work alongside, not instead of, the hands-on investigations those standards describe.

Single packs or the full bundle

Two packs are free to open right away: Materials Detectives and The Water Cycle. The other packs each have their own unlock code, sold one at a time or together in the Grade 2 Full Series Bundle on the K12 Movie Guides store.

A good way to start is to open Materials Detectives on your classroom screen, teach one Learn card, and see how your class responds.

Questions teachers ask

Do students need accounts?

No. Students open a pack from a link or QR code. Progress is saved in the browser on that device, so students should keep the same device and browser until they finish.

Is there sound?

No. Every FireFlash card is silent, so the packs work in a quiet room or on a shared classroom screen.

Which packs are free?

Materials Detectives and The Water Cycle open without an unlock code.

Does the series cover every Grade 2 science standard?

No single resource does that. Each pack guide lists the standards it supports, and the cards are designed to sit alongside your own investigations.
