Materials Detectives: Observe, Test & Sort

Look closely. Test properties. Sort what you find.

What is a spoon made of, and how can you tell wood from metal without guessing? Materials Detectives turns students into careful observers who describe, test and sort everyday materials. It is the free pack of the Grade 2 series.

Free: no unlock code needed. Teachers share it with students from Share with students.

What students investigate

Students start with the idea that objects are made from materials, then learn the words to describe them: color, texture, hardness, how easily a material bends, and whether a surface looks shiny or dull. Each word gets its own Learn card with an everyday object.

The second half is about doing science with those words. Students compare two materials, plan a test that answers a question, record what they observe in a chart, and sort materials by a property they share.

Who it is for

Materials Detectives is written for Grade 2 and is a good first pack for the year, because the observe-test-record habit returns in every other Grade 2 pack. It leads straight into Choosing Materials, which uses those properties to pick the right material for a job.

It works well before a hands-on sorting tray, so students already have the words for what they feel and see.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. Objects are made from materials.
  2. Color can help describe a material.
  3. A material can feel smooth or rough.
  4. Materials differ in how easily they dent.
  5. Some materials bend more easily than others.
  6. Some surfaces look shiny or dull.
  7. Comparing shows how materials are alike and different.
  8. Plan a test that answers your question.
  9. Write or mark observations in a chart.
  10. Sort materials using a shared property.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 2-PS1-1 — core ideas

Questions teachers ask
