Heating & Cooling

Find out which changes from heating or cooling can be undone.

Ice melts, and water can freeze again. A cooked egg never turns raw. Heating & Cooling shows everyday foods before warming, after warming and after cooling, so students can tell a change that goes back from one that does not.

Ice Record Three panels of the same notched cup: a block of ice, then liquid water, then ice again.
A good answer uses evidence about change.

What students investigate

Students start with the idea that warming and cooling can change what we see, and that three observations (before, after warming, after cooling) help check a change. They watch ice melt and water freeze, melted butter firm up again, and chocolate harden in a new shape.

Then come changes that do not go back: a cooked egg stays cooked, a baked cookie never becomes dough again, and a hard frost can damage a basil leaf. The last cards ask students to look after cooling before they decide, and to back a claim with evidence about the change.

Who it is for

Heating & Cooling is written for Grade 2 physical science. It fits well beside a cooking or ice-melting activity, because students can match the before, warmed and cooled stages on the cards to what they see.

The words reversible and irreversible are taught with a concrete food example before any question uses them.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. Warming and cooling can change what we see.
  2. Three observations help us check a change.
  3. Ice melts into water, and water can freeze again.
  4. Melted butter can become firm again when cooled.
  5. Chocolate can harden again in a new shape.
  6. Cooling a cooked egg cannot make it raw.
  7. Cooling cannot turn a baked cookie into raw dough.
  8. A hard frost can damage a basil leaf.
  9. We must look after cooling before we decide.
  10. A good answer uses evidence about change.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 2-PS1-4 — core ideas

Questions teachers ask

Which examples does it use?

Ice and water, butter, chocolate, an egg, a cookie and a basil leaf in frost.

Does it use real heat in class?

No. The cards are animations. Any classroom heating should follow your school's safety rules.

How do I open it after buying?

Enter your unlock code on the Unlock page, then share the pack with students from Share with students.
