Pollinators & Seeds

See how animals move pollen and help seeds travel.

A bee visits a flower and leaves with pollen on its fuzzy body. A burr hooks onto a fox and drops off far away. Pollinators & Seeds shows how animals help plants by moving pollen and seeds, then lets students judge simple models of both.

Two bee visits Two equal apple blossoms. Left: a bee stands on the middle of the flower, on the pollen. Right: a bee stands on one outer petal only, away from the middle. The bee touches pollen. The bee is only on a petal.
Touch matters when pollen moves.

What students investigate

Students see a bee pick up pollen during a visit, learn that pollen clings to tiny hairs on its body, and find out that pollination happens when pollen reaches the part of a flower that catches it. They learn that moving pollen and seed travel are different events.

Then seeds travel: hooks catch animal fur and carry burrs to new places, and fruit-eating birds carry whole seeds. The last cards look at models: a useful pollination model shows pickup and delivery, a hook-and-loop model shows how burrs attach and come off, and every model has limits.

Who it is for

Pollinators & Seeds is written for Grade 2 life science and leads well into a hands-on model, such as a pipe-cleaner bee or a hook-and-loop burr. Students can judge their own model with the same questions the cards ask.

It pairs with What Plants Need and Compare Habitats.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. A bee may pick up flower pollen during a visit.
  2. Pollen can cling to tiny hairs on a bee.
  3. Pollination occurs when pollen reaches a receiving flower part.
  4. Pollen moving and seed travel are different events.
  5. Hooks can catch animal fur and carry seed-bearing burrs.
  6. A burr can move on fur and fall off elsewhere.
  7. Some fruit-eating birds can carry whole seeds to new places.
  8. A useful pollination model must show pickup and delivery.
  9. A hook-and-loop model can show how burrs attach and release.
  10. A model has limits and may be improved.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 2-LS2-2 — core ideas

Questions teachers ask

Does it show close-up views?

Yes. A close view shows pollen in the hairs on a bee's body, and the burr cards show the hooks that catch fur.

Is building a model part of it?

The cards ask students to judge models. Building and testing their own model in class is still the full task.

How do I open it after buying?
