Weathering & Erosion

Read evidence of how ice, water, wind and plants change the land.

Water freezes in a crack and the rock splits a little wider. A stream carries mud downhill and drops it where the water slows. Weathering & Erosion shows how ice, water, wind and plants change the land, and how students can test those changes fairly.

A rock crack can widen without the rock moving.

What students investigate

Students start with evidence in the land. Repeated freezing widens a rock crack without moving the rock, moving glacier ice scrapes rock, flowing water carries sediment from a source to a new place, and sediment settles where water slows down.

The second half is about fair tests. Students change slope while keeping everything else alike, vary the volume of water instead of the test time, compare grain movement at different wind speeds, and compare covered and bare soil under the same rain. They work out how fast a stream bank changed and decide when wind evidence supports a claim.

Who it is for

Weathering & Erosion is written for Grade 4 Earth science. It leads into Earthquakes & Volcanoes, which looks at Earth features on a world scale.

The cards fit well before a stream table or soil tray investigation, since students already know to change one condition at a time.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. A rock crack can widen without the rock moving.
  2. Moving glacier ice can scrape rock.
  3. Follow the source and destination of sediment.
  4. A deposit is evidence of collected sediment.
  5. Change slope while keeping the other conditions alike.
  6. Vary water volume, not the test duration.
  7. Compare grain movement at different wind speeds.
  8. Compare covered and bare soil under the same rain.
  9. Rate depends on change and elapsed time.
  10. A fair test makes the comparison trustworthy.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 4-ESS2-1 — core ideas

Questions teachers ask

What is the difference between weathering and erosion?

Weathering breaks rock down where it is. Erosion moves the pieces to another place, and deposition is where they settle.

Does it include fair tests?

Yes. Students compare slope, water volume, wind speed and ground cover, changing one condition at a time.

How do I open it after buying?
