Light & Sound Signals

Explore how patterned light and sound can carry messages.

Three quick flashes can mean "come here" if everyone agrees on the code. Light & Sound Signals shows how patterns of light and sound carry messages, then asks students to design, test and improve a signal of their own.

A lamp on a high platform A child at a lit lamp stands on a raised platform; far away on the floor another child stands watching. Three flash marks above.
A sender starts a signal for a receiver.

What students investigate

Students learn that an agreed pattern can carry a message from a sender to a receiver, and that light flashes and sound taps can both do the job. They read a code key to decode a signal and see why clear gaps keep one message from running into the next.

Then they become designers. Students encode instructions as different patterns, see why sender and receiver need a shared code, choose a signal that fits the success rule and limits, compare designs in fair trials, and improve a weak design before retesting it.

Who it is for

Light & Sound Signals is written for Grade 4 physical science and engineering. It builds on Light & Reflection and uses the same design-and-retest steps as Energy Conversions.

It fits well before students send flashlight or clapping codes across the room, because they already know to agree on a code and leave a gap between signals.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. An agreed pattern can carry a message.
  2. A sender starts a signal for a receiver.
  3. Light flashes and sound taps can carry a message.
  4. A code key helps a receiver decode a complete signal.
  5. Clear gaps and distinct patterns keep messages apart.
  6. Encoding assigns different patterns to useful instructions.
  7. A sender and receiver need a shared code.
  8. Choose a signal that fits the success rule and limits.
  9. Use fair trials to compare signal designs.
  10. Improve a weak design, then retest to check it.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 4-PS4-3 — core ideas
  • 3-5-ETS1-2 — builds toward
  • 3-5-ETS1-3 — builds toward

Questions teachers ask

Does the pack use real sound?

No. Like every FireFlash pack it is silent. Drum taps are shown as silent beat symbols, so the pack works on a quiet classroom screen.

Which standards does it support?

It supports 4-PS4-3 directly and builds a foundation for the Grades 3-5 engineering design ideas about comparing and testing solutions.

How do I open it after buying?

Enter your unlock code on the Unlock page, then share the pack with students from Share with students.
