Weather Hazards & Solutions

Compare designs that can reduce weather damage.

Weather Hazards & Solutions is an engineering pack. Students look at designs people use to reduce weather damage, from flood barriers to insulated pipes, and learn to judge each one by what it must do, what limits it, and the evidence that it works.

Flood Barrier Limits One board with two matching panels. Each shows the same small school and floodwater whose flat top is at the same height in both panels. In the left panel a low sandbag barrier sits below the water level, so water covers it and reaches the door. In the right panel a taller sandbag barrier rises above the water level before the door; the doorway side is dry except a tiny wet trace where a little water seeps through the bottom bags. A simplified illustration, not a measured flood. same water levellow barriertall barrierseepage
Flood barriers can help, but they may leak.

What students investigate

The pack starts with what a weather hazard is and how evidence shows the harm it causes. Students then compare solutions for different hazards: flood barriers that help but may leak, raised floors, rain gardens, roof ties for wind, storm shutters, connected lightning protection, cool roofs that reflect sunshine, and pipe insulation that slows heat loss.

The last three cards teach the engineering words that tie it together. Criteria say what a design must do, a constraint limits the choices, and a good design meets both.

Who it is for

This pack is written for Grade 3 and suits an engineering or community-safety unit after Climate Regions. Abstract words like criteria and constraint get their own Learn cards with a concrete example first.

Teachers can use the design cards as discussion starters before students design and test their own solution.

What students learn

12 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. Weather hazards can cause harm.
  2. Flood barriers can help, but they may leak.
  3. Higher floors face less floodwater.
  4. Rain gardens can reduce nearby puddles.
  5. Strong connections help roofs resist wind.
  6. Secure shutters help protect windows.
  7. Lightning protection needs connected parts.
  8. Cool roofs can reduce solar heating.
  9. Pipe coverings can slow heat loss.
  10. Criteria tell what a design must do.
  11. A constraint limits our choices.
  12. Good designs meet needs and limits.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 12 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 36 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 36 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 3-ESS3-1 — core ideas

Questions teachers ask

Which hazards does it cover?

Floods, strong wind, storms with flying debris, lightning, extreme heat and freezing cold.

Does it teach criteria and constraints?

Yes. Each word has its own Learn card, then students use both to judge a design.

How do I open it after buying?

Enter your unlock code on the Unlock page, then share the pack with students from Share with students.
