Magnets & Invisible Forces

See how magnets and static electricity act without touch.

Magnets & Invisible Forces shows forces that work without touching. Students watch a magnet pull steel across a gap, see poles attract and push apart, and test how distance and a sheet of paper change the pull.

A pair of bar magnets face unlike poles and move closer together. Two identical permanent bar magnets sit on a straight rail, with left N facing right S, short gap in between. One magnet slides toward the other while N/S stamps remain fixed. north poleattractsouth pole
Opposite poles pull together.

What students investigate

Students learn that a magnet attracts some materials, such as steel and iron, but not others, such as aluminum. Opposite poles attract, matching poles repel, a magnet can pull through thin paper, and its pull changes with distance.

A rubbed balloon attracting nearby hair introduces static electricity as another force that acts without touch. The pack ends with a design problem: using a magnet to keep a door shut, and judging the design with test evidence.

Who it is for

This pack is written for Grade 3 physical science and follows Forces in Motion. It works well before students explore real magnets, so they arrive with the words attract, repel and pole.

The fair-test and design cards also prepare students for engineering lessons that ask them to judge a solution with evidence.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. A magnet can pull steel without touching it.
  2. Magnets attract some materials, not all.
  3. Opposite magnet poles attract each other.
  4. Matching magnet poles push apart.
  5. A magnet can attract steel through thin paper.
  6. Distance can change a magnet’s pull.
  7. A fair test changes one thing.
  8. A rubbed balloon can attract nearby hair.
  9. A magnet can help keep a door shut.
  10. Test evidence helps us judge a design.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 3-PS2-3 — core ideas
  • 3-PS2-4 — core ideas

Questions teachers ask

Does it cover static electricity?

Yes. One Learn card shows a rubbed balloon attracting nearby hair, with its own Review and Mastery questions.

Is there an engineering design part?

Yes. Students look at a magnetic door latch and use test evidence to judge the design.

How do I open it after buying?

Enter your unlock code on the Unlock page, then share the pack with students from Share with students.
